Discovering Santiago Island

Welcome to Santiago Island

Santiago is the largest island in the archipelago, and more than half of the country's population lives in Praia, the capital of Cape Verde. It was discovered in 1460 by Portuguese explorers, quickly becoming an important center for the transatlantic slave trade, and has a long and tumultuous history marked by colonization, rebellions, and independence movements.

In addition to Praia, Tarrafal, Assomada, and Cidade Velha deserve mention. Tarrafal, once a Portuguese penal colony, displays the ruins of the prison, the former Tarrafal Concentration Camp, and the Resistance Museum, with exhibitions on the colonial past and the struggle for independence. Assomada, the center of the Santa Catarina municipality, is known as the granary of Cape Verde, and its market was the first in the country, receiving people from all over the island daily.

Santiago is rich in contrasts: dizzying mountains, sterile landscapes, and lush green valleys after a few drops of rain. Colonial marks, from pirate attacks to the slave trade, are very present. The markets are vibrant bastions of African culture, with traditional music, agricultural products, handicrafts, and must-try flavors. The adverse past did not break its people — this is evident in the spirit of morabeza, a generous and welcoming way of living.

History, Geography, and Culture

The island is known for its diversity of flora and fauna, including a vast variety of birds, lizards, and turtles. It is rich in cultural manifestations that reflect its history and great musical tradition, with funaná, batuque, and morna enjoying extreme popularity among locals and visitors. Ceramics, basketry, and embroidery are also part of Santiago's craft identity.

And, of course, it is worth exploring the island's gastronomy, which has cachupa as its ex-libris — a corn and bean stew with beef, goat, and chicken, a staple of Cape Verdean cuisine. Also noteworthy are the corn pastéis and the feijão pedra stew with salted meat prepared in a mortar.

Exploring the Capital — Praia

Praia is the most populous city in the country and the political, economic, and administrative core of Cape Verde, featuring Portuguese colonial-style architecture. In the center lies Praça Alexandre Albuquerque, surrounded by the Parish Church, the Court, and the City Hall — this is where the population gathers, especially in the late afternoon, on a basaltic plateau called the Plateau.

Avenida Amílcar Cabral is the main artery of the Plateau, with renowned commercial houses, gardens, and terraces. Of note are the old defense lines immortalized by the Fort and its cannon pointed at the sea. Visiting Praia is breathing culture and tradition: the Sucupira Fair, typically African, and the Municipal Market, whose agricultural products bring the scent of the inland gardens. The city also offers the beaches of Mulher Branca, Prainha, Quebra-Canela, and Gamboa, the latter being the stage for a renowned Music Festival on May 19th.

Getting to Know Cidade Velha

Santiago's historical heritage is evident in Cidade Velha, in the municipality of Ribeira Grande de Santiago, 15 km west of Praia — the birthplace of Creole culture, where African and European cultures unite. Formerly Ribeira Grande, it was the first capital of the archipelago and obtained city status in 1533, being the oldest city created in the tropics by Europeans, elected one of the 7 Portuguese Wonders of the World and today a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Pelourinho (Pillory) was erected in 1520, and the Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, in Manueline style, dates back to 1495 — the oldest colonial church in the world. The first street of Portuguese urbanization in the tropics, Rua Banana, leads to the church. The Cathedral dates from 1693 and was looted by French pirates two decades later, the same raid that damaged the Convent of São Francisco. Dominating everything is the Forte Real de São Filipe, which since 1590 commanded the city's defense against pirates and privateers.

Embracing Nature

The island hosts a panoply of landscapes, from volcanic peaks to dream beaches. The country's only botanical garden in São Jorge dos Órgãos is a must-see, as is the Serra da Malagueta Natural Park, with breathtaking views. Other natural attractions are found in the Ribeira da Barca Valley, Praia de Baixo, and Praia da Calheta de São Miguel. The humid and mild climate provides lush vegetation in the high areas, contrasting with the aridity of the lowlands.

It is estimated that there are about 105 species of land and sea birds in Santiago, 24 of them endemic and the rest migratory from Africa and Europe, making the island a great spot for birdwatching. Birds of prey (kestrel, owl, falcon, kite) and insectivores (blue-feathered kingfisher, crow, Iago sparrow, herons, Raso lark) can be found. The mild water temperature (annual average of 25 ºC) and coral platforms promote a rich seabed, perfect for diving, especially to the east.

Trails and Beaches

Pico da Antónia, the highest point on the island, is a popular hiking destination with stunning views. One of the most magnificent viewpoints is Rui Vaz, halfway to Pico Leão. Other popular routes include the Ribeira da Barca trail, the Serra da Malagueta trail, the Calheta de São Miguel trail, and the trail from Monte Tchota Natural Park to Pico d'Antónia. It is worth visiting the bays of São Francisco and São Martinho, where the seaplane landed.

Beaches not to be missed: Praia de Baixo, Calheta de São Miguel, Gamboa, Prainha, Quebra Canela, Tarrafal, São Francisco, Praia dos Amores, Porto Mosquito, and Angra. In nature and adventure, the Ribeira de Poilão Dam, the Água Caída Waterfall, the Águas Belas Caves, the natural pools of Ribeira Prata and Ponta de Atum, the Móia-móia dune fossils, and turtle nesting observation also stand out.

Festivals and Cultural Attractions

Santiago is the stage for many festivals throughout the year. One of the most popular is the Gamboa Festival in May, which brings together music, dance, and traditional food. Other must-see events include the Assomada Carnival, the Tarrafal Music Festival, the Kriol Jazz Festival, the Nha Santa Catarina Festival, the Fish Festival, and the celebration of São João on June 24th.

Cultural attractions include the Plateau, Praça Alexandre Albuquerque, Sucupira Market, the Ethnographic Museum, and the Amílcar Cabral House Museum in Praia; the Cathedral, the Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, the Convent of São Francisco, the Pelourinho, and Rua Banana in Cidade Velha; the Tabanka Museum Cultural Center in Assomada; and the Museum of the former Tarrafal Concentration Camp.

Private Cidade Velha Tour

Santiago Island · €65 · Half day (2–3 hours) · Rating 4.8/5 · Instant booking

First European colonial city in the tropics. Oldest church, Fortress and Pillory.

Private guided tour of Cidade Velha, founded in 1462 and classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2009 — the first European colonial city in the tropics and a key point of the Atlantic slave trade for more than three centuries.

The route, led by a local historian guide, takes you to the Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário (the oldest colonial church outside Europe, 15th century), the Royal Fortress of São Filipe (panoramic view over the bay), Rua Banana (the oldest street in Cabo Verde) and the Pelourinho — where the difficult but necessary exercise of telling history from the perspective of the enslaved, and not the settlers, is carried out.

It ends with a break at a house of morabeza by the beach, with a tasting of pontche (grogue cocktail) and an informal conversation about how Cabo Verde transformed this heritage into its own identity.

Highlights

  • accommodation: Half-day tour, no overnight stay.
  • group: 100% private tour for your group (1–6 people). Exclusive historian guide.
  • activities: Guided UNESCO visit, 15th-century Church, Fortress, Pillory, Rua Banana and pontche tasting.
  • transport: Private transfer from Praia included (30 min each way).
  • meals: Pontche tasting and local fruit included. Optional lunch at a stewed goat restaurant (€15 extra).

Community impact: Funds training for local cultural guides.

Your local host: Maria Helena Tavares

I am a native of Cidade Velha and have a master's degree in African History. I believe that telling the history of this place is an act of justice: over half a million enslaved Africans passed through here before heading to the Americas. Our job as guides is to honor that memory and show what Cabo Verde has built from it.

FAQ

Is it an exclusive or group tour?
100% private for your group. It allows for a personalized pace, free questions, and adaptation to specific interests (architecture, history of slavery, religion, etc.).
In which languages is it given?
Portuguese, English, French and Spanish. Please indicate your preferred language in the booking.
Is it accessible to people with reduced mobility?
Partially. The Church of Rosário and Rua Banana are flat, but the Fortress involves a steep stone climb. We adapt the route according to your needs.
How does the payment support Cidade Velha?
65% stays in the local community: it pays the guide, contributes to the training of new young guides from Cidade Velha (6-month program) and supports artisans who produce in the surrounding streets.

Baía do Inferno and Monte Angra Hiking Route

Santiago Island · €91 · 3 to 4 days (28 km, 4 sections) · Rating 4.8/5 · Confirmed on request

A 28 km hiking trail divided into 4 sections, connecting the fishing villages of Porto Mosquito and Porto Rincão to the mountain village of Entre Picos de Reda. Cross the imposing canyons of the Santa Clara and Angra Rivers, with unique landscapes, wild fauna, and welcoming communities. Includes the possibility of boat trips to discover deserted beaches and observe the impressive gravitational collapse of the cliff.

Baía do Inferno is Santiago's best-kept secret: 28 km of wild coastline, 400m vertical cliffs, deep canyons, and beaches accessible only by foot or boat. In 2003, it was declared a Natural Park due to its marine and terrestrial biodiversity — including endemic birds such as the guincho-vermelho and plants unique in the world.

The hiking route is divided into 4 sectors that can be done individually or linked together over 3–4 days: Porto Mosquito → Aguas Belas, Aguas Belas → Ribeira da Barca, Ribeira da Barca → Porto Rincão, and the inland sector to Entre Picos de Reda. Each sector includes stops in fishing communities where freshly caught fish is served for lunch, and the program can include a boat trip in a traditional vessel to discover deserted beaches and observe the impressive gravitational collapse of the cliff.

Highlights

  • accommodation: Overnight stays in fishermen's houses in Porto Mosquito and Ribeira da Barca (2–3 nights, depending on chosen sections).
  • group: Maximum 6 people. Certified local guide and, in remote sections, a second support guide.
  • activities: Trekking in 4 sections (28 km), optional boat trip in Baía do Inferno and observation of endemic birds.
  • transport: Transfers from Praia to starting and return points. Optional boat hired from local fishermen (€30 extra).
  • meals: Full board in fishermen's houses: grilled fish, limpets, conch and seafood cachupa.

Community impact: Supports the fishing communities of Porto Mosquito and Porto Rincão and the conservation of the Baía do Inferno and Monte Angra Natural Park.

Your local host: Associação de Pescadores de Porto Mosquito

We are the fishing community that has lived at the mouth of Baía do Inferno for generations. We know every cave, every current and every bird's nest on these cliffs. Hosting trekkers and taking them by boat to our beaches is how we supplement our fishing income — and protect the park from illegal fishing and uncontrolled construction threats.

FAQ

Can I do just one sector?
Yes. Each sector (6–8 km) can be done as a 1-day trip. The most popular is Porto Mosquito → Aguas Belas (most spectacular in terms of cliffs). The complete 28 km version requires 3–4 days.
What is the difficulty?
Moderate to high depending on the sector. There are sections with natural staircases, exposed stretches next to cliffs, and elevation changes of 200–400m. Not recommended for those with vertigo or little trekking experience.
Is the boat trip mandatory?
No, it is optional (€30 extra per person). But it is the only way to see the most spectacular part of the bay — including the gravitational collapse zone. If the sea allows, we highly recommend it.
How does the payment support the park?
70% stays in the fishing communities (accommodation, meals, boat) and with the park management association, which monitors endemic bird nests and supervises illegal activities.

São Vicente is known as the music capital of Cape Verde, and its cuisine — like everywhere in the archipelago — is influenced by Portuguese, African and Brazilian cooking. Unmissable local products include grogue, a strong rum made from sugar cane, and the famous cachupa.

We start in Mindelo, among colonial architecture, a strong musical culture and buzzing markets. We visit the Municipal Market, over a century old, and the Mindelo Cultural Centre, where you can watch rehearsals and classes in music, singing, theatre or visual arts.

Then we head to the island's crystalline golden beaches — Laginha, São Pedro and Calhau — and, for those who want it, we climb Monte Verde, the island's highest peak at 774 metres. At the end of the day, Mindelo's nightlife opens up with morna, jazz and coladeira around Rua de Lisboa and Praça Nova.

Discovering São Vicente

Exploring the capital: Mindelo

Mindelo is worth a visit for its colonial architecture, strong musical culture and buzzing markets.

The Municipal Market, with over a century of history, is the right place to feel local life, with dozens of stalls and shops: fresh and dried produce stands, butcher, grocery, cafés, boutiques, electronics shops, a tailoring atelier, a crafts shop, a herbalist, a theatre documentation centre and permanent exhibitions.

The Mindelo Cultural Centre is a real lesson in history and culture, with its doors always open — you can watch rehearsals and classes in music, singing, theatre, visual arts or yoga. Throughout the year there are concerts, festivals, talks, training sessions, book launches and other events. It includes a crafts shop, a bookshop and a courtyard to relax in.

Crystalline golden beaches

The island is home to some of Cape Verde's most stunning beaches. The top three are Laginha, a favourite among tourists and locals; São Pedro, known for its calm atmosphere and great surf conditions; and Calhau, more remote, with dramatic rock formations and calm waters, perfect for swimming and snorkelling.

But there are more than a dozen beaches: Baía das Gatas, Calhau, Calheta Grande, Ceilada do Calhau, Flamengos, Laginha, Palha Carga, Praia Grande, Praia do Norte, Salamansa and Topim — each offering something different, whether swimming, sunbathing, windsurfing, kiteboarding, surfing, snorkelling or relaxing with a book.

Hiking Monte Verde

Nature hikers will fall in love with Monte Verde. The trail starts in the village of São Pedro and climbs the steep rocky slopes to the island's highest peak, at 774 metres.

The ascent is strenuous and requires good physical fitness. Along the way, hikers enjoy breathtaking views over the island's rugged coast, the surrounding sea, lush vegetation and unique flora and fauna.

Nightlife and music

The night can start at Baía das Gatas beach, a popular spot that hosts an annual music festival and is an excellent choice for a sunset cocktail.

Mindelo is known for its intense music scene and for the bars and clubs downtown, particularly around Rua de Lisboa and Praça Nova. From traditional Cape Verdean music to jazz, reggae and electronic beats, there is good music for everyone.

The archipelago's most famous style is morna, a melancholic, soulful genre often compared to the blues. Cesária Évora, Bana and Tito Paris started their careers in Mindelo and became huge ambassadors of Cape Verdean music worldwide.
